While many of us have been binging Netflix or baking up a storm during isolation, the AV Old Scholars Soccer Club has been encouraging their players to keep fit, in the hopes that their 2020 season can soon officially begin.
Not allowing the delay of the season stop them, the Club enlisted the help of one of their members, old scholar Michael Case (2000), to guide them through a weekly Facebook Live 30-minute workout at a time when they would normally be at training. “The workouts allowed for a solid, sweaty HIIT session, but also ensured the social banter and interaction could continue, so no player felt alone. The club also provided two weekly pre-recorded workout videos combining a mixture of challenges, ball skills, strength and agility that could be done at any time in a small space at home” said Michael.
If that doesn’t inspire you to put your active wear to good use, the Club also created the Strava Club. With the help of the Strava app, over 60 players were able to log runs, rides and workouts which in turn helped to motivate each player and bring back the camaraderie that was missed during isolation. President of the POSSC, old scholar Steven Mann (2001), went one step further and pledged $1 for every kilometre logged to go towards the Club’s first social event. With a night out in sight, together the players collectively ran over 200km.
With the Club now resuming face-to-face training, players are fighting fit and are ready for the 2020 season. It’s a testament to the dedication and positive culture of the Club and we look forward to cheering them on when matches can resume.
